Matt grew up in central New Hampshire. Without much soccer in the area, he travelled to other areas to play club soccer. After high school, he played collegiate soccer for Champlain College in Burlington, VT and then transferred to play goalkeeper at Virginia Intermont College. He helped the Cobras to a regular season and conference tournament championships, a Region XII title, top 10 national ranking and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament. After college, Leiva acted as player/coach with the Vermont Voltage of the PDL for 2 years. After making the move to Virginia, he was hired by the Northern Virginia Royals of the USL to be their goalkeeper coach and later they asked him to take over the U20 Men's Nova team. He later was hired by Real Maryland FC of the USL Division 2 Pro League to train the first team goalkeepers.
In 3 seasons as Head Coach at Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax, Leiva took a program that was falling apart at the seams and turned them around into the current Virginia Independant School State Champions. The Panthers are quickly becoming known as one of the elite private high school programs in the DC Metro area. His club team, Real Mclean has climbed the ladder from Division 6 to Division 1 of the National Capital Soccer League.
As Technical Director of the Northern Virginia Legends, Leiva is focused on developing confident, brave leaders on and off the soccer field and bringing the positives back into youth soccer.
